How to Prepare for a Photoshoot

A lot of pieces have to come together perfectly for a photoshoot to be successful. And, believe it or not, if you’re the model, you have an essential role to play in turning a mediocre shoot into an amazing photoshoot. For one, showing up on time is key. However, there are other important steps you can take. Here’s how you can prepare for the big day.

One to Two Weeks Before the Photoshoot

Preparing for a photoshoot should ideally start one to two weeks before. While that may sound like a lot, remember that the better prepared you are, the less stressed out you’ll feel on the big day. First of all, make sure you have your wardrobe! Some shoots provide specific clothes, but if that’s not the case, choose clothes that are appropriate for the type of shoot. A business photoshoot requires very different clothing styles from a nightclub photoshoot, for example. Either way, pick clothes that make you feel beautiful, confident, and that flatter your body.

Next, consider an appointment to a hair stylist – fresh haircut or hair color are always a great idea! You want your hair looking perfect, and a hairstylist can give you exactly what you need. You should also get a manicure so that your nails are trimmed and clean. Nail care is important because your nails may be visible in your photo session. If you want to wear nail polish, go for pastel colors. Avoid bright nail colors as they can distract attention from your face and body.

Although your shoot is still a week or two away, try to reduce your sun exposure. A sunburn can take a few days or weeks to heal. If you plan to be out in the sun for long stretches, don’t forget to apply sunscreen frequently.

Days Before the Shoot

As you get closer to the day of your shoot, ramp up your preparations. Eat a healthy diet daily, so you don’t feel bloated or sluggish on the day of the shoot. Try to avoid alcohol, too. Replenish your body with lots of water so that you look refreshed and vibrant on the day of the shoot. Prioritize sleep (which means reducing the late nights) and wear sunscreen. If you wax instead of shaving, do so days before so that any inflammation or redness has a chance to calm down.

Take another look at your clothing items and make sure they fit the shot list and type of shoot. It may be a good idea to call the photographer to discuss your wardrobe. What types of images will the photographer be getting? Getting a clearer image of what the shoot day will be like can help you prepare better — with your clothes, makeup, and hair.

The Night Before

You may have butterflies in your stomach the night before, but now’s a good time to be even more thoughtful with your preparations. Attention to detail at this stage is crucial.

Don’t Drink Alcohol

Avoid alcohol at all costs. Alcohol can make your face look puffy the next morning and your body bloated.

Makeup

Many photoshoots have makeup artists, so you won’t have to worry about doing your own makeup. But it may be a good idea to bring your favorite makeup essentials to show the makeup artist what works on your face and why.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

It may be difficult to sleep throughout the night, especially if you’re excited about the next day. But a full night’s sleep is important! Think about meditating for an hour before going to bed. Meditation can help quiet your mind and relax your body.

Wash Your Hair

Don’t forget hair care. Wash and dry your hair so that your hairstylist is working with clean, bouncy hair. Skip gel or hairspray, as this will change the texture of your hair and make it more difficult to style.

Practice Your Facial Expressions

Practicing your facial expressions will give you more confidence on the day of the shoot. Use the self-portrait mode on your phone to take selfies, and see which expressions work best for your features.

Get Comfortable With Your Poses

If you don’t have modeling experience, practice different poses in front of your mirror so you feel more comfortable on the day of the shoot. Have fun and experiment. Decide what works with your posture and your body type. Incorporate your personal style and flair into your poses, too. It should scream “you” and no one else.

Shoot Day

Last-minute preparations are just as crucial if you want to have a successful shoot. Here are some last-minute things to do.

Morning Shower

After your morning shower or bath, splash cold water on your face. That will get rid of that “just woke up” look and give you an energized glow. It will also get you into the right mindset.

Pack Photoshoot Essentials in Your Bag

Bring a bottle of water with you. Keep your fully charged phone and charger in your bag as well. Your photoshoot may run longer than expected, and you’ll need to communicate with others when it’s done.

Getting to the Photoshoot Location

Give yourself extra time to get to the shoot. You should know the exact location and how to get there. Try to arrive 10 minutes before your call time so that you can meet the team and mentally prepare. Lastly, don’t make any other plans for the day. Some photoshoots go over time, and the crew may need additional time to get all their shots.
