What Is a Boudoir Photoshoot

If the words “sultry” or “intimate” come to mind when you think of a boudoir photoshoot, you’re not far off the mark. Boudoir officially means “a woman’s bedroom or private room,” so at its core, a boudoir photoshoot essentially means photographing a woman in a private setting, often in a romantic, sensual way.

But boudoir photography is a little more than that straightforward definition. The genre involves a bit of voyeurism, as if the viewer is observing a private moment, and the subject in the photograph is unaware that she’s being watched.

The History of Boudoir Photography

Boudoir photography started in France and became popular in the 1920s, dominated by photographers such as Albert Arthur Allen. In the 1940s, boudoir photo sessions evolved from elegant portraits and ornate backdrops in private bedrooms to more provocative photos of pin-up girls wearing an assortment of costumes.

Recently, boudoir photography has taken on a new role, especially in the world of weddings. It’s common now for a bride to book a bridal boudoir photography session and create a boudoir album as an intimate gift for her future spouse.

What’s the Point of Boudoir Photo Sessions?

The answers are deeply personal, and for each woman, the reasons may be different. Some women want to capture themselves at their sexiest before time leaves its mark or they start a new chapter in their lives. Others enjoy giving boudoir photos to their significant others as a wedding or anniversary gift – a gift that’s intimate and heartfelt. And still others want to embrace the body positivity movement, capturing every curve and “imperfection” their bodies offer, so that they feel celebrated in their own skin.

And that’s what makes boudoir photography special. Anyone can do a boudoir photo shoot. You don’t have to be a model. You can be any age, shape, or size. All you need, really, is the desire to express yourself confidently. And let’s be honest. It’s also empowering to be able to own your sexuality and sensuality, too, without feeling the need to be “perfect.”

What’s the Complete Boudoir Session Experience Like?

The boudoir experience is probably a little different depending on the photographer, but there are some common elements.

If you decide to book makeup and hair services too (although these services are not a must but it can help you feel even more comfortable), so on the day of the shoot you’ll have your team to make sure you look just perfect. A professional hair stylist and a makeup artist will help get you ready for your shoot. You may be asked to bring your outfit with you. Alternatively, lingerie or wardrobe options will be provided by a stylist whom you hired.

Once you’re dressed and camera-ready, a photographer will position you on set – this could be your bedroom or a bedroom in a private studio. Don’t worry if you’re nervous. Boudoir photographers are good at making people feel at ease and creating a comfortable, relaxing environment before the shoot starts.

Once the session begins, the photographer will guide you through different poses and may even suggest wardrobe changes. This will give you a variety of beautiful photos to choose from.

Posing for Your Boudoir Photos

It can be difficult to decide on a pose. But try to highlight your favorite features and choose poses that give you confidence. Practice in front of a mirror before your session, and then rehearse with the photographer to ensure you end up with natural, flattering poses.

Make sure to pick poses that make you feel sexy and confident, too, as that will shine through your photos. And then think about what vibe you want to exude. Something soft and intimate? Seductive and bold? Flirtatious and fun? You can express any version of yourself that feels right, and a photographer will be there to bring your vision to life.

The Benefits of Doing a Boudoir Photo Shoot

The boudoir photo shoot experience can be great for many reasons. Here are just some of the benefits.

It Can Boost Your Confidence

Having a professional photographer capture your sexy, sensual, and beautiful side can do wonders for your self-esteem. You get to drop your insecurities and fears. And it can be a reminder to focus on your strengths and appreciate your natural beauty.

It Makes a Gift to Your Partner

A boudoir photo album doesn’t have to just be for your wedding. An intimate portrait of yourself at any time is a wonderful gift that can add some sparks to your relationship and help you bond with your partner.

It’s a Great Way to Celebrate Your Curves

Society’s obsession with “thin” can do a ton of damage to women’s self-worth. If you have a plus-size body, you may want to celebrate those curves by booking a plus-size boudoir photography session. A sensual boudoir experience that highlights your favorite features can make you see your body through a new and more positive lens. You also get to choose what to wear and what makes you feel sexy, instead of abiding by society’s definitions.

It Will Take You Out of Your Comfort Zone

If you’re looking for a unique, fun, and different experience, why not treat yourself to a boudoir photography session? It can be a session where you rediscover your femininity, celebrate your true self, and see yourself in a whole new light. Staying within your comfort zone is great, but you’ll never challenge yourself or allow yourself to grow. A boudoir photoshoot pushes you past your fears and helps you embrace feelings of self-doubt.

You’ll Have Beautiful Self-Portraits

Whether you decide to show other people these photos or keep them for yourself doesn’t matter. What you’ll walk away with are beautiful photos that you can cherish forever. And on days when you’re feeling particularly low or doubting yourself, you can take a look at them and be reminded of everything you have to offer.
